In view of the very popular Netflix series The Crown, in which Lord Mountbatten’s allegations of pedophilia was brushed over, we here try to make a list of famous pedophiles who were accused of molesting underage children.
1. Lord Mountbatten
Lord Mountbatten was a member of the British Royal family who was the second cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth II, and was the last last Viceroy of India. He was tragically assassinated by a bomb hidden in his fishing boat by the members of IRA.
In 1944, American author Elizabeth Wharton Drexel claimed that Mountbatten had ‘a perversion for young boys’. His driver from 1942-43, Norman Nield, told a tabloid that he transported young boys aged 8 to 12 for him and was paid to keep quiet. Because he was from the Royal family he was never tried in court for it, like many other famous pedophiles.
2. Paula Poundstone
Paula Poundstone is an American stand-up comedian who was listed at number 88 on Comedy Central’s list of all-time greatest stand-up comedians.
In 2001 she was charged with three counts of lewd acts upon a girl younger than 14. She pled not guilty which she later changed, in return she wanted the charge of committing three counts of lewd acts dropped. Paula was sentenced to probation and six months in rehabilitation and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service. She came out as asexual in 2013.
3. Bill Tilden
Bill Tilden was a American tennis player who was the ranked number one in the world for six years in the 1920s and was the winner of 10 Grand Slam titles. He was one of the most famous athletes in the world in his heydays and ESPN ranked him at number 45 on its Sportscentury’s Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century.
He was arrested in November 1946 on Sunset Boulevard by the Beverly Hills police and charged with a misdemeanor for soliciting a 14-year-old boy with whom he was having sex in a moving vehicle. Bill was sentenced to a year in prison, but served 7½ months. He was arrested again in January 1949 after picking up a 16-year-old hitchhiker who filed a lawsuit later. The judge sentenced Tilden to a year in prison of which he served 10 months. The tennis ace , who is now one of the famous pedophiles, was shunned by the establishment and public after his convictions. Even after his death, in 2016 a proposal to honor him with a marker at the Pennsylvania club was voted down.
4. Chuck Berry
Chuck was arrested in 1959 for transporting a 14-year-old girl across state lines. He was sentenced to three years in prison in January 1962 for offenses under the Mann Act, after a very short trial, which put him on the list of famous pedophiles.
5. Trevor Berbick
Trevor Berbick was the Jamaican boxer who was the WBC Heavyweight Champion for 8 months in 1986. He lost his title to a 19-year old Mike Tyson.
The boxer was arrested in 1992 for raping his children’s 16-year old babysitter. He was sentenced in Florida for 5 years but served only 15 months.
6. Roman Polanski
Roman Polanski is a Polish born film director. His most acclaimed movies are Rosemary’s Baby (1968) and Chinatown (1974).
In 1977 he was arrested for drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl, Samantha Geimer. He was charged with five offenses. The director pleaded not guilty to all charges. In 1978 he fled to France hours before his sentence. Because he fled before sentencing his charges are still pending. He will arrested immediately upon entering USA. It is also rumored that he slept with the star of his movie Tess, Natassja Kinski, who was underage at the time.
7. Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson is one of most famous and greatest entertainers of all time. In 1993, Evan Chandler accused Michael Jackson of sexually abusing his 13-year-old son, Jordan Chandler. A lawsuit was filed against him which he settled out of the court. Michael paid the Chandlers $23 million as financial settlement.
After the release of the documentary, Living with Michael Jackson, in which he said that he saw nothing wrong with having sleepovers with minors and sharing his bedroom, he was charged by the Santa Barbara authorities with seven counts of child molestation and two counts of intoxicating Gavin Arvizo, a a cancer patient in remission who was thirteen years old at the time with alcoholic drinks in 2003. There was a trial which went on for four months, at the end of which the jury returned with the verdict of not guilty.
8. Gary Glitter
Gary Glitter is a former English musician who is the father of Glam rock. He has sold over 20 million records and had 26 single hits.
In 1997 he was arrested for having child pornography on his computer and sentenced in 1999 to serve four months in prison. After his release he tried to move to Cambodia, but was deported due to suspected child abuse charges in 2002. After this he tried to settle in Vietnam where he was again found guilty of abusing minors and sentenced to three years in prison. Atleast 19 countries have refused him entrance to their country.
9. Errol Flynn
Errol Flynn was a actor who became famous for playing ‘Robin Hood’ and also notorious for his offscreen antics. The AFI named his role of Robin Hood, the 18th greatest hero in American film history. In 1942 he was accused by two 17-year old girls of statutory rape. He was acquitted after a trial, but his reputation was irreparably damaged and got himself enlisted amongst famous pedophiles.
